So i figured that an 85 Toy axle was the ideal axle to swap in because it has the longest under-side gusset of all their solid front axles. Well, i didnt take into account that the ubolts point down on toyotas, and i was pointing mine up! So i went out and had square ubolts made, only to then realize that the gussett is not parallel to the spring perch, and would cause the ubolts to sit on an angle. So the solution we came up with was to cut notches in the gussett for the ubolts to pass through. We cut them about an inch wide, and then welded all the openings shut and ground them down, to have what you see in the second picture. Now i can use my round ubolts again! the rest is all self explanatory- we just bolted up the front axle! Some people say you need to slot the center holes in the spring perches, because the zuk front springs are narrower. Well, they are, by about a half inch, i guess. Its a small enough amount that you can actually just push the springs, and theyll line up and then you can bolt it all together. Normally this would cause the bushings to bind, but with the missing links theres alot of slop in the links (just by design) so theyll absorb most of this. If i was going to drive this on the road, i would slot the perches. For a trail-only vehicle, im content to leave them like this for now. The last two pics show a mistake i made when i ordered the kit from Trailtough. I never mentioned that id be using Toyota axles, and well, apparently the suzuki axles use one small and one large spring plate up front, and the Toy uses all large. So im going to need to either exchange the smaller plate, or slot the openings so the larger ubolt required for the toyota axle will fit the plate. |
