Since the stocker was on its way out, i decided to upgrade. This is the ambulance package alternator for the PSD. Cranks out a whopping 215amps! Its pretty much bolt-on. You need a bigger charge cable (i made one out of 4ga), longer bolts since the alt is taller (they are 10mm, 1.5pitch, and need to be ~1.5" longer), and a slightly longer serp belt. I got one 1" longer, and it seems to work well. I had to notch the cover on the motor to clear the back of the alt, but other that that there were no problems with the install. There is a harness available from ford which replaces the 130amp harness; eventually i want to install that, but it is not necessary, since both alts use the same plug on the back of the alt. Basically, you bolt on the newer alternator. Make a new charge cable to run from the relay to the alt. Disconnect old charge cable from both ends. Disconnect Yellow/White wire from old charge cable near fusible link and connect to the relay. You can skip this step if you leave the original charge cable hooked up at the relay, just make damn sure you wrap up the opposite end that goes to the alt so it doesnt ground out on anything. Make a ground wire to go from extra stud on back of alternator and run it to the stud where the passengerside battery grounds, on the bottom of the motor. |
